Pierre Loti Hill
The Transcendent of Pierre Loti Hill
In the sleepy İstanbul suburb of Eyüp, Pierre Loti Hill rises above the Golden Horn. Named after the French writer Julien Viaud, or rather his pseudonym, Pierre Loti Hill offers stunning views and a collection of ancient İstanbul architecture that has been lovingly preserved since the 19th century. There is a cable car that leads directly to the top of the hill, but adventurous travellers should tackle the somewhat strenuous climb up the stairs that crosses the Sultan’s Cemetery.
The hill is a popular spot for a selfie or three and is home to six historic mansions that have been converted into a boutique hotel. There is also a restaurant and a familiar cafe, where you can enjoy the view with a cup of Turkish tea or coffee. Loti used to sit here to write his novels. For the best view, try the telescope on the viewing platform at the Piyerloti Cable Car Station.
Upon returning and crossing the Golden Horn, you’ll face the dilemma of where do we entertain the kids, the visually stunning Miniatürk or the fun and interactive Rahmi M. Koç Museum?
Pierre Loti Hill, although not actually a park, this wooded hill in Eyüp, interspersed with historic cemeteries, is a large green space with one of the most famous views of İstanbul's waterway from the top.
A well-kept path winds its way up the hill through the Eyüp cemeteries, which are not only some of the largest in İstanbul but also some of the oldest. If you do not feel like exercising, you can take the cable car over the hillside to the top instead.
The peak offers a delightful view of İstanbul's Golden Horn, which is just as impressive after sunset, when the city lights illuminate, as it is during the day. The café area here is popular with locals who come to drink tea, chat, and enjoy the view.
