The Avenue of Avenues
The Avenue of Avenues
Bağdat Street, on the Anatolian side of the city is considered one of the best shopping streets in the world. This one-way street stretches for 14 kilometres and is located between the districts of Kadıköy and Maltepe. This street is also a cultural place where, among other things, the Republic Day cultural parade takes place or a sporting victory is celebrated.
Bağdat Street is a remarkable part of the city that breathes life into the metropolis. It is commonly known as Bağdat Caddesi and is an upper-class residential area. It is known for its affluent and elegant boutiques offering both local and international fashion and designer labels. It is lined with mini shopping arcades, department stores, and gourmet and ethnic restaurants from all over the world. There is something for everyone here!
Bağdat Street is a long, green, and lively avenue that runs parallel along the shore of the Sea of Marmara. The first houses in this area were the luxurious wooden chalets built after 1870. Some of them are still preserved and contribute to the upscale appearance of the residential area. Besides the lavish shopping, Bağdat Street is famous for its pubs and cafés serving international and local light bites, coffees, tea, and desserts to tantalise the taste buds and quench your thirst.
Here you have a sense of real İstanbul, where the locals shop, meet for a drink, catch up on the latest gossip, and party the night away. The most popular part of the street is full of boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and benches scattered along the side and back streets, and within walking distance of the lush greenery of the Şaşkınbakkal, the Caddebostan Coast, and, of course, the famous Caddebostan Beach at either end of Suadiye. The Morning is the perfect time for a leisurely stroll to window shop and take in the sights of the avenue. It is suitable for anyone who enjoys shopping, eating and drinking.
Bağdat Street is not only a shopping district but also one of the best nightlife areas in İstanbul, evenings and weekends are lively and atmospheric here.
Despite its urban and modern character, the boulevard is lined with old plane trees that line the beautiful shops and tangents leading to the waterfront.
Today, the boulevard serves as a meeting place for people celebrating a sporting event or a holiday on the Asian side of İstanbul. There is a lot of singing, dancing, driving, and honking. Spend a day on the waterfront, visiting the restaurants and the many attractions on Bağdat Street, and you’ll get your culinary - and cultural - money’s worth!
